The Digital Markets Act was proposed to help businesses relying on digital gatekeepers to enjoy a fairer business environment. The media sector in particular has been in a difficult position with the emergence of tech giants and the increased intermediation of digital services. Hence special attention is needed on the dynamics between media companies and gatekeepers for the distribution of online news, access to readers, advertising and remuneration, in line with the EU democracy and media freedom objectives.

These issues have already caught the attention of competition authorities conducting investigations in France and in Germany, while outside of Europe, the Australian regulator has taken the approach of binding codes of conduct.

As the EU co-legislators are working on compromise amendments, we will discuss whether and how the DMA can fix bargaining imbalances between European media and tech giants.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew rapporteur ECON)
  • MEP Tomasz Frankowski (EPP shadow rapporteur CULT)
  • MEP Marcel Kolaja (Greens, shadow rapporteur IMCO)
  • Wout van Wijk, Executive Director at News Media Europe

The event will be moderated by Luca Bertuzzi, digital and media editor at Euractiv
