Juha Laakkonen elected President of News Media Europe

Marseille, 2 June 2026 — News Media Europe is pleased to announce the election of Juha Laakkonen as its new President for a two-year term. He succeeds Deirdre Veldon, whose leadership, commitment and steady support have been deeply appreciated across the organisation.

Juha Laakkonen brings extensive experience in media leadership and a strong understanding of the opportunities and pressures facing news publishers in Europe. In his role as President, he will help lead News Media Europe’s work in representing the sector and defending the conditions that allow quality journalism to thrive.

News Media Europe also wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Deirdre Veldon for her warm, thoughtful and dedicated leadership. Her contribution has helped strengthen the organisation’s voice and sustainability during an important period for the European news media sector.
