PRESS RELEASE

– Brussels, 4 June 2019 –

Fernando de Yarza López-Madrazo, President of News Media Europe and CEO of Henneo, was appointed President of WAN-IFRA on Monday. De Yarza is also a Vice-President of the Asociación de Medios de Información in Spain. He took over the WAN-IFRA Presidency from Michael Golden from the New York Times. De Yarza had been a Vice-President of WAN-IFRA since December 2018.

Fernando de Yarza said: “The new strategic directions which we agreed upon relate to the defense of the increasingly threatened freedom of the press, that of journalists and of publishers. I will also push for the search for more sustainable business models in the digital environment and for the promotion of innovation in the news media.”. He also expressed his wish to champion closer ties with industry counterparts in Latin America.

In addition, Stig Kirk Ørskov was also appointed to the WAN-IFRA Presidency as Vice-President. Stig Ørskov is the CEO of JP/Politikens Hus and a board member of the Danish Media Association, where he previously held the Presidency.

Stig Ørskov said: “Press freedom is under attack in many places around the world these years. The need for us to stand together, to ensure that journalists and publishers retain the right and the ability to serve the world community with independent journalism and fact-based information, is accordingly greater. In a time of great challenges for the press, there are also huge opportunities.”.
