European press publishers react to VDL’s State of the Union: Build Sustainability, Not Dependence

Press releases , September 10, 2025

European news publishers warmly welcome President Von Der Leyen’s strong words in support of free and independent media in her State of the Union address, and share the conviction that journalism is the backbone of democracy and accountability in Europe. The threat posed by “news deserts”—where disinformation flourishes, and independent voices fall silent—is real and urgent. That’s why Europe cannot afford to leave its press sector on life support or dependent on hand-outs: the press needs to be empowered to stand on its own feet, not simply rescued when it’s struggling.

Build Sustainability, Not Dependence

Europe’s news sector doesn’t seek charity; what it needs is a fair and sustainable business environment. Support through resilience programmes and increased funding is appreciated, but lasting media sustainability comes from robust policies that ensure fair competition, copyright protection, and transparent platform algorithms. Let’s ensure that publishers aren’t economically suffocated by the unchecked power of big tech or undermined by regulatory proposals that threaten their viability.

Journalism: The Only Real Antidote

There’s no substitute—professional media is the only viable antidote to disinformation. While platforms can amplify voices and offer variety, only independent, accountable journalism brings facts to light and keeps democracy resilient.

As President Von Der Leyen notes, a free press keeps power in check, shines a light on corruption, and connects communities across Europe—Europe’s next step should be policies that let journalism thrive, not just survive.

Future-proofing Europe’s democracy requires making media sustainability a priority, not an afterthought.
